Project Overview
Nearly half of world does not get enough sleep. For college students, this problem is exacerbated by the demands of classes, jobs, work, and friends. For my final project in UX Design (Fall 2022) at NYU, I created Sleepverse, a sleep tracker app that reimagines sleep hygiene for college students, providing them with a simple, free way to get better sleep.
Role
UX/UI Designer
Duration
4 Weeks (Dec 2022)
Tools
Figma, Invision
Problem
How might we help college students get at least 8 hours of quality sleep daily by making technologies that promote better sleep habits more accesible and joyful to use?
Research
In the research phase, I started with desk research, looking into studies done on the impacts of sleep deprivation on the body and proposed solutions based off this data. In UX Design class, I then interviewed two peers on their experiences with sleep deprivation.

Key Findings
  • “Despite having a physiological need for 9 hours of sleep each night, teenagers average approximately 7 hours. In fact, 20% to 25% of adolescents report feeling sleepy during the day” (Carskadon).
  • “[To combat sleep deprivation, avoid] late-afternoon naps (or napping more than 1 hour during the daytime) and avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine before bedtime. It is also advised to avoid activities that are physiologically, cognitively, and emotionally activating before bedtime” (Marhefka).

Takeaways
Sleepverse was the first major project where I focused heavily on the UX design process. Researching, designing, and iterating on the prototype has taught me a lot about the importance of research in user experience as it informs every part of the process. In the future, I would iterate on my work by doing more user testing and simplifying the functionality of the app to help users focus on managing caffeine intake and blue light exposure.
